How to choose a renovator in Sydney

Choosing the wrong renovator costs more than money. Here is how to sort a genuine contractor from a gamble, in the order that matters.

How to choose a renovator in Sydney

Check the licence

Every renovator doing structural or wet-area work in NSW needs a licence. Ask for the number and check it on NSW Fair Trading. Ours is 452017C.

Insurance and HBC cover

Public liability protects your property while work is underway. Home Building Compensation cover protects you if the builder cannot finish. Ask for both, in writing.

Read recent reviews across platforms

Look for reviews that are recent, specific about the job, and answered by the business. One glowing review from three years ago is not a track record. Check more than one platform.

One contractor, or six?

A renovation lives or dies on sequencing. One contractor holding every trade means nobody waits and one person is accountable. Six separate trades means you are the project manager.

Get it in writing

A fixed price after inspection, a clear scope, waterproofing to AS 3740, and a payment schedule tied to stages. If a quote is vague, the job will be too.
