What Home Building Compensation cover means for you
Home Building Compensation (HBC) cover is one of the strongest protections a homeowner has, and one of the easiest to check. Most people never ask for it.

What it is
HBC is a NSW scheme that protects you if your builder cannot complete the work or fix defects — for example due to insolvency, death or licence loss. It is taken out per contract, not per company.
When it is required
By law it applies to residential building work in NSW valued over $20,000. A licensed builder provides a certificate of cover for the specific job before work begins.
What it covers
Incomplete and defective residential work — commonly up to six years for structural defects and two years for non-structural, subject to the scheme rules. It is the safety net behind the workmanship.
Ask for the certificate
A compliant licensed builder can show you the HBC certificate for your job. If a contractor cannot, that tells you something. On our jobs over $20,000 it comes as standard.
